What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a cap that surrounds the tooth. We typically use a crown to restore a damaged tooth, but they can also use it to improve the appearance of a smile. A crown can consist of three different materials, all-metal, ceramic-on-metal and all-ceramic. The location of the crown in the teeth will determine the best material to use. For example, front teeth need to have an all-ceramic crown, if possible, since it looks the most natural. Patients may often use ceramic-on-metal crowns since they look natural but have the durability that only metal can provide.
How Crowns Are Placed
At Palouse View Dental, we offer a fast and efficient one-visit process for placing crowns, thanks to our advanced technology. First, a local anesthetic is applied to ensure your comfort. We prepare the tooth by shaping the outer structure and removing any existing decay or old filling material. If necessary, we may rebuild severely broken-down portions of the tooth, similar to getting a filling.
Using our intraoral 3D scanner, we capture an exact replica of the prepared tooth, eliminating the need for uncomfortable impressions. This data is sent directly to our in-office CEREC machine, which fabricates your custom crown in just a few minutes. Once ready, we place the crown, ensuring a perfect fit with a close-up x-ray. Any necessary adjustments are made to your bite, and the crown is permanently cemented into place, giving you a strong, natural-looking restoration—all in one visit.
